The Finnish Air Force Received Its First New Pilatus Liaison Aircraft
The Finnish Air Force received the first two Pilatus PC-12 NG liaison aircraft in Tikkakoski on Thursday, 8 July 2010. All of the six aircraft that the Finnish Air Force has purchased will be ferried from Switzerland to Finland during this summer. The deliveries of the Pilatus PC-12 NGs are ahead of the initial schedule according to which they were planned to take place late this year.
The contract for the purchase of six aircraft was signed between the Finnish Air Force and Pilatus Aircraft in the spring of 2009. The new aircraft will replace six twin-engined Piper Chieftains that have been operated for 25 years, nine Valmet Redigos that have been flown in liaison duties, and seven Piper Arrows that have been removed from service in 2004. Piper Chieftains will be retired during 2010 while Redigos, one by one, by the year of 2013.
The Pilatus PC-12 NG is a single-engined turboprop aircraft that can be reconfigured quickly for different missions. The large cargo door considerably facilitates and speeds up the transportation of critical items, including spares for fighters, both in Finland and abroad. The aircraft can be fitted with nine passenger seats.
The training of the first Finnish pilots to convert to the new aircraft was organized in Switzerland in the spring. After the deliveries are completed, conversion courses, which are scheduled for the coming fall, will be split between ground school in Switzerland and flight training in Finland.
The purchase is based on the Government Report on Security and Defence Policy from 2004 which proposed that the Air Force’s liaison aircraft fleet be replaced by 2010. The total value of the purchase amounts to 22.5 million euros
